Chandelier

Today we went to the house to hang out and admire the chandelier we got from my cousin Jeanine.
The word Chandelier appeared in the English language in the late 14th Century, directly from the 12th Century Old French world Chandelier this was a new spelling of the earlier 10th Century French word Chandelabre which in turn comes from Latin Candelbrumfrom the Latin Candela meaning candle.

Whatever!

Splendid!

Greenery on the terrace

My father gave me some money to buy something for the new house. We went to the garden centre, bought loads of plants and put it all in place so I can show the photos to my father while he can still see them.

New furniture

Today the table and chairs were delivered. Waiting for the delivery provided an opportunity to take a few snapshots. Gradually the place is taking shape!

Furniture hunt

Mr A. and I went to the Westfriese Beurs in hoorn. It's a huge shed full of second hand furniture. We found a dining table with four chairs and an armchair for the 'stijlkamer'.

Trevor

Trevor has already found his favourite place - in the 'stijlkamer'.

Location

The house used to face the sea (Zuiderzee), as you can see on the map (at bottom tip is where the house is located). When a new train station was built on an island right in front of it, the Oosterdok was created, blocking the sea view. Later the Afsluitdijk (Close Off Dike) was built (in the 1930s) in the north of the country, effectively turning the Zuiderzee into a body of freshwater, fed bij the IJssel, a branch of the Rhine.
Later the street changed its name from Buitenkant (Outside) to Prins Hendrikkade (Prince henry Quay).
In 2002 I lived on a houseboat on the Binnenkant (Inside), just 50 metres away.

What this blog is all about.

Mr. A and I bought a new house. It came renovated but without a kitchen, bathroom or loo. Before anything could be put in place, the utilities for the kitchen (water, gas) need to be redirected from the basement to the upper ground floor. While this operation is in progress, we search for furniture and fittings, and we commission a furniture maker to construct a customised kitchen to our specifications.
